Zaiput Continuous Liquid-Liquid Partition Chromatography

Zaiput publication

This 100% Zaiput produced paper uses our counter-current multistage platform (MS) with an interplatform feed injection as an alternative to simulated moving bed chromatography and centrifugal partition chromatography. This technique combines the advantages of both of these traditional techniques while negating many of the disadvantages.

Zaiput technology

Zaiput membrane-based separators are devices that allow for continuous phase separation exploiting differences in the wetting properties of two immiscible or partially miscible liquids onto a porous membrane. From these devices, available from laboratory to production scale, Zaiput has developed a platform for counter-current extraction, used in a variety of industries as a tool to optimize and develop demanding liquid liquid extractions, leading to higher extraction efficiencies with a much smaller internal volume than what competing technologies typically require.

Our counter-current multistage platform (MS) enables, with appropriate configuration, continuous separation of chemical species leveraging the principle of Partition Chromatography.

When Crystallization isn’t an option, CLL-PC provides a cost-effective solution to separate chemical species at a fraction of the cost of Simulated moving bed Chromatography.

Our method and related hardware offer the ability to carry out partition chromatography in a continuous manner. In our approach phase separation is accomplished with the Zaiput membrane-based liquid-liquid separators. By selecting a specific solvent mixture, ensuring that the species to separate have a coefficient greater than 1 and the other species a coefficient lower than 1, the counter-current extraction platform and using an adequately designed multistage extraction process with >5 stages, this allows the user retrieve a phase with one species (or one group of species) and another phase with the other species (or another group of species). In other words, very much like simulated moving bed chromatography the technique allows to separate a continuous feed into two streams each one with a distinct group of species in it.

Continuous Liquid Liquid Partition Chromatography

With very low operational costs, a very compact footprint, the possibility of using solvents with similar density as water, and without the complexities coming from high pressure and rotating systems, Zaiput’s solution represents a step forward in CLL-PC.
